Clinical Features of Re-Emerging Hepatitis A: An Analysis of Patients Hospitalized during an Urban Epidemic in Korea

Abstract: From April 2008 to November 2008, many cases of hepatitis A were reported in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province in Korea. Furthermore, the rate of severe or fulminant hepatitis have significantly increased during the latest epidemic (13.4% vs. 5.2%, p=0.044). Therefore, widespread use of vaccine is warranted to reduce the burden of hepatitis A in Korea.

“…Older age is classically related to greater morbidity and HA mortality; however, it is not clear as to whether this is directly due to liver damage or decomposition of underlying disease 33. Choi, et al34 reported that patients >40 years of age did not show differences in clinical outcomes. Similar to these results, the population of this study ranged from 20-60 years of age, and ALF developed between 25-40 years of age.…”

“…Lifelong immunity is often acquired after HAV infection [3], and hepatitis A during childhood is generally asymptomatic or causes flu-like symptoms. However, it is also associated with symptoms that range from nausea and vomiting to fulminant hepatitis and death among adults [1,2,4,5]. Unfortunately, hepatitis A is one of the most common infectious diseases in the world [6], and its incidence varies according to socioeconomic development and public sanitation.…”
