Clinical Features, Epidemiology, and Climatic Impact of Genotype-specific Human Metapneumovirus Infections: Long-term Surveillance of Hospitalized Patients in South Korea

Abstract: Background. Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) commonly causes upper and lower respiratory tract infections. Here, we performed long-term retrospective surveillance of hMPV infection among patients hospitalized in South Korea between 2007 and 2016 and investigated seasonal dynamics and clinical characteristics associated with each virus subtype/genotype.Methods. Patient specimens were tested for hMPV and other respiratory viruses by commercial molecular assays. Medical records of hMPV-positive patients were reviewed… Show more

“…The meteorological data were collected from the database of Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA; https://data.kma.go.kr/ ). The KMA provides high-resolution meteorological information for specific areas on a flexible web-based platform 20 , 21 . Additionally, we collected the daily records on ten basic meteorological factors, including average temperature, maximum temperature, minimum temperature, ground temperature, diurnal temperature variation, amount of rainfall, wind speed, relative humidity, atmospheric pressure, and duration of sunshine.…”

“…In urban Italy, childhood infections with RSV were negatively correlated with temperature while positively correlated with humidity (34). Human metapneumovirus in Korea peaked between weeks 15 and 20 (35)(36)(37)(38) which is later than for the UK (39). In China, human metapneumovirus infections were associated with sunshine duration, wind speed and diurnal temperature variation (39), and human bocavirus showed both summer and winter increases in different years (40).…”

“…1,2 While the burden of influenza viruses is best studied, non-influenza viruses such as respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), human metapneumovirus (hMPV), human coronaviruses (CoV), adenoviruses (AV), and parainfluenza viruses (PIV) are responsible for a substantial burden of illness in adults. [3][4][5][6] However, the population-based incidence and burden of community-onset non-influenza respiratory viruses associated with hospitalization in adults have not been systematically assessed. Previous approaches have utilized weekly laboratory surveillance and syndromic surveillance associated with discharge data in statistical models to estimate rates of hospitalization and mortality associated with respiratory viruses.…”
