“…Before the invention of anti-tubercular drugs these lesions were treated by short-circuiting procedures such as ileoileostomy and ileotransverse colostomy (Aird, 1957). With the availability of specific drugs, the aim of the surgical approach shifted towards local extirpation of the disease with wide ileal resections, right radical hemicolectomies and combinations of these procedures (Anand and Phatak, 1961 ;Abrams and Holden, 1964;Bhansali and Desai, 1968;Byrons and Mann, 1969). Recognizing the complications, side effects, limited applicability and the risks involved, simple procedures such as limited ileocaecal resections and 'strictureplasties' have evolved.…”
