Clinical features and outcome of neuropsychiatric lupus in Chinese: analysis of 240 hospitalized patients

Abstract: Neuropsychiatric (NP) events are severe manifestations of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and relate to poor outcome. The aims of this study are to investigate the NP manifestations of SLE and to identify the predictive factors for clinical outcome. There was a retrospective review of 240 hospital patients with primary NP events of SLE (NPSLE) from 1990 to 2004. Neuropsychiatric manifestations, SLE disease activity index (SLEDAI) score, System lupus International Collaborating Clinic/American College of Rhe… Show more

“…We found CI in a relevant percentage of Italian SLE patients, with an overall prevalence of 31% (19% mild, 7% moderate and 5% severe), a prevalence in the average when compared with results from previous studies that ranged between 6% and 79% [4], [10][14], [26]. Indeed, the prevalence of CI greatly varied between different cohorts.…”

“…Furthermore, we found that 76 NPSLE patients displayed 14 types of NP manifestations and that the most common NP manifestation in this population was seizure (47%), followed by delirium, headache, psychosis, and cerebrovascular disease, similar to the findings from another Chinese population. 13 However, seizure is less common in other ethnic populations of NPSLE patients. 22,23 In addition, while previous studies report only 3.7-7% of patients with delirium, [19][20][21][22] we found 26% of the NPSLE patients with delirium.…”

“…ethnic, demographic, clinical differences (disease duration and activity, duration of followup)], rarity of some NP syndromes, or variability in the sensitivity of diagnostic tests assessing behavioral dysfunction [23,25]. Concerning morbidity and mortality, NPSLE is associated with increased global SLE disease activity, poorer prognosis and earlier mortality [26][27][28]. Recently, a study conducted on a large cohort of carefully phenotyped NPSLE investigated the causes of death and the characteristics associated with mortality [29].…”
