Clinical Features and Differential Diagnoses in Laryngeal Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma

Abstract: Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is the most common malignant tumor of salivary glands. However, it is a rare entity in larynx. Laryngeal cases are frequently misdiagnosed with other malignancies and they are under-reported. So, recognizing the clinical and histological features of this tumor is essential. Laryngeal mucoepidermoid carcinoma can arise in supraglottis, glottis and subglottis. Generally, it presents as a submucosal mass; therefore, progressive symptoms without any identifiable lesion in laryngoscopy must… Show more

“…Most studies agree that the prognosis of malignant minor salivary gland carcinomas of the larynx is determined by the histological tumour type, the differentiation grade and the ability to achieve complete surgical resection [12]. Survival rate analysis in our group of patients showed 3- and 5-year overall survival rates of 46.7 and 20%, respectively, which are lower than in some reports [6].…”

“…The diagnosis of high‐grade MEC is challenging and its morphology can mimick other high‐grade tumors such as SCC, adenosquamous carcinoma, and salivary duct carcinoma. High‐grade MEC and SCC have similar histopathological features, and the presence of intermediate and mucous cells is the main key for the differentiation of these tumors (3, 43). The adenosquamous carcinoma is a rare variant of the SCC with a different clinical presentation when compared with the MEC (43, 44).…”

The adenosquamous carcinoma is a rare variant of the SCC with a different clinical presentation when compared with the MEC (43, 44). Microscopically presents typical areas of SCC with keratin pearl formation, anaplasia, intercellular junctions, SCC in situ component in the overlying mucosa, presence of mucous cells and mucin stain, and absence of intermediate cells (43, 44).…”

“…However, mucoepidermoid carcinoma is much more rarely seen in the larynx. 1 Mucoepidermoid carcinomas are made up of three cell types. The cell types include: epidermoid cells, mucus secreting cells, and intermediate cells.…”
