Clinical features and diagnosis of Hodgkin's disease

Abstract: This paper briefly summarizes current knowledge of Hodgkin's disease, based on a review of the voluminous recent literature and on the author's observations in 135 cases. Special features of the incidence patterns are noted. The initial clinical findings are described and problems of staging are discussed. Lymphangiographic techniques, as well as radioisotope scanning procedures which can now be used to study the liver, spleen, lung and bone marrow, have added new dimensions to the meaning of “clinically local… Show more

“…Five of our patients showed a hypochromic microcytic anaemia. Ultmann et al (1966) found such anaemia in 10% of patients with HD at presentation. None of our patients haad iron deficiency as judged from stainable iron in the marrow or the level of serum ferritin.…”

“…Spectrophotometric assays of xanthine oxidase activity were confirmed using radioactive tracer techniques. 10 In certain experiments, in order to measure the distribution of enzyme activity in the soluble and insoluble phases after antibody precipitation, the enzyme-antibody precipitate was removed by centrifugation at 0" C. and resuspended in a volume of glycylglycine buffer equal to that of the original suspension. Xanthine oxidase activity was then assayed independently in the supernatant and the precipitate suspension.…”
