Clinical evaluation of the marginal fit of cast crowns – validation of the silicone replica method

Abstract: Replication of the space between a tooth and its cast crown, using a light-body silicone supported by a heavy-body silicone, is a recognized technique to evaluate the quality of a restoration. This study validates a similar method that is of great clinical and experimental interest. Whatever the type of silicone used, comparison is possible between different technical procedures of crown elaboration (type of impression, type of material, method of spacing, etc.). If an appropriate silicone is used, the cement … Show more

“…20,21 In addition, the defects on the replica or in the cutting process could affect evaluation of the film thickness. 22,23 Higher adaptation values of ceramic inlays measured using the replica technique in our study could have arisen due to the aforementioned factors related to the indirect evaluation. The OCT technique seemed to give more reliable information about the adaptation of inlays because of direct evaluation.…”

“…38 In our study, silicone replicas were evaluated with the optical microscopes that are often used in studies. 20,23 Measuring three-dimensional (3D) replicas with computerized techniques 24,25 and micro-CT 9,10 that allows high-resolution measurement could provide more reliable results. However, 3D computerized and silicone replica techniques are reported as applicable methods for the marginal and internal adaptation evaluation.…”

“…However, that technique does not eliminate the risk of defects and is destructive. 14,17,18 The method chosen in the present study allowed the same copings to be used in retention tests.…”

“…The present study used a replica technique with proven reliability. 17,18 The technique may present some practical problems such as the risk of air bubbles at the interface between light-and heavy-body impression material and tearing. 14 An alternative method is to cement the copings onto the abutments and measure the cement film thickness after sectioning.…”
