Clinical Evaluation of Poly(2-methoxyethylacrylate) in Primary Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting

Abstract: In an attempt to make cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) less traumatic for patients undergoing cardiac surgery, extracorporeal circuits (ECC) have been modified to achieve this goal. Poly(2-methoxyethylacrylate) (PMEA, X-coating™) is a new polymer coating used in the ECC. PMEA studies have shown excellent biocompatibility with the components of blood. In this evaluation, PMEA-coated ECC were compared with control (CTR) circuits with emphasis on hematological parameters, perioperative homologous blood product usage,… Show more

“…6,7 Subsequently, in the 2000s, polymer-coating, which can modify the blood-contacting surface to prevent protein adsorption, was commercialized and used in the ECC circuits. 8 Since the heparin-coating was a game changer in those days, numerous reports on the hemocompatibility of heparin-coating have been published. [9][10][11] The reports support that the heparin coating is superior to any other coatings on the ECC circuits.…”
