Clinical Evaluation of Intravitreal Triamcinolone Acetonide in Diabetic Macular Oedema

Abstract

The study was carried out to evaluate prospectively the efficacy and safety of intravitreal Triamcinolone acetonide (IVTA) injection in Diabetic Macular Oedema (DME). Patient who were diagnosed to have DME were enrolled in the study after obtaining written informed consent and fulfilling the inclusion criteria. They were then subjected to comprehensive eye examination followed by recording of best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) with Snellen chart and obtaining coloured fundus photography and fundus Fluorescein Angiography (FFA) before treatment. Triamcinolone was injected in each eye of Test group. BCVA assessment, coloured fundus photo recording and FFA were performed at 1 st and 3 rd post IVTA month's follow up visit. Intraocular pressure (10P) was measured at every follow up. 100 eyes of 90 patients were selected. 50 eyes randomized to receive active treatment (Test Group) and rest 50 eyes of another 50 patients were put on to strict metabolic control (Control Group) Significant improvement was noticed in visual acuity, in coloured fundus picture and also in FFA in test eye group both at 1 month and at 3 months follow up. 10P rise was seen in only 10% of test eyes. This IVTA is a premising, effective and relatively safe therapeutic mode of treatment for DME and it was observed to have definite potential in improving visual acuity in short terms. The side effects are also transient. Further ongoing work on IVTA would pave the way for finding more effective regime for managing DME.
