Clinical evaluation of fitting toric soft contact lenses to current non‐users

Abstract: A high proportion of astigmats who are not using toric soft contact lenses can be fitted with current lenses. Previous contact lens drop-outs and neophyte wearers achieve visual acuity comparable to spectacles when fitted with toric soft lenses. Spherical contact lens wearing astigmats achieve superior visual acuity when refitted with toric soft lenses. These findings suggest that many astigmats who are not currently using toric soft contact lenses could do so successfully.

“…More success is achievable due to the wider choice of different methods of stabilisation from the different manufacturers. Lens instability problems (lenses rotating off axis) are infrequently encountered and easily solved [8]. The overall success of these lenses evidently fits well into the higher volume fitting settings of national group practices.…”

“…The importance of astigmatism correction to prevent dropout of CLs has been shown in non-presbyopic subjects 45 and it is considered an important factor to succeed in presbyopic CLs fitting (see Table 1). Considering the current availability of toric multifocal CLs and the possibility to correct astigmatism with monovision as well CL practitioners should always consider astigmatism correction in presbyopes.…”

“…Practitioner confidence in toric lenses is growing and greater than in the past 29. For example, a recent study of 200 subjects across 16 investigational sites found that 88% of subjects were fit with one toric lens model on first attempt 30…”
