Clinical Evaluation and Management of Benign Soft Tissue Tumors of the Extremities

Abstract: Benign lesions comprise a majority of soft tissue tumors. It has been estimated that their incidence outnumbers that of malignant tumors by a factor of at least 100 [1]. While history and physical examination can start the diagnostic process, imaging including the use of magnetic resonance imaging can be more helpful. Biopsy of these tumors is sometimes necessary and can be performed in a number of ways, often in conjunction with definitive treatment. Specific diagnostic and treatment strategies for a number o… Show more

“…According to the literature, benign bone tumors are more common in younger individuals (8). In this study, the mean age of patients with benign bone tumors was found 35.8 years that is younger by comparison with the mean ages found as of other tumors.…”

“…Intramuscular myxoma usually occurs in patients 50-60 years of age, somewhat more often in women 5 , most commonly affecting the muscles of the thigh. The tumor is rarely located in the intermuscular planes and more often in the muscle tissue itself 2 .…”

“…The incidence of intramuscular myxoma is around 1 case in 1,000,000 inhabitants 4 . Due to the hypocellularity of the lesion, excisional biopsy is indicated (instead of fine needle aspiration cytology), while complete excision is almost always curative 5 . We presented a patient with an asymptomatic intramuscular myxoma diagnosed and treated at a tertiary care center in Podgorica, Montenegro.…”

“…When assessing cartilaginous tumours, radiographs can be helpful in revealing areas of calcification, soft-tissue shadowing and bony destruction [38,39]. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can provide useful information about the size and location of a tumour as well as its proximity to other anatomical structures.…”
