Clinical epidemiology and pharmacoepidemiology studies with real-world databases

Abstract: Hospital-based registry data, including patients’ information collected by academic societies or government based research groups, were previously used for clinical research in Japan. Now, real-world data routinely obtained in healthcare settings are being used in clinical epidemiology and pharmacoepidemiology. Real-world data include a database of claims originating from health insurance associations for reimbursement of medical fees, diagnosis procedure combinations databases for acute inpatient care in hosp… Show more

“…The literature on RWD practices and awareness about corresponding warehouses in certain Asian countries like China, Japan, and South Korea is significant [5,[9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17], partly because these countries also have recommendations on the utility of RWE by external regulators [3]. This study seeks to understand the evolving landscape of RWD utilization and its implications across Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore, and Vietnam, where RWD practices are emerging or undergoing significant development [4].…”

“…We used the RWD database, which is maintained by the Health, Clinic, and Education Information Evaluation Institute (HCEI, Kyoto, Japan) with support from Real World Data Co., Ltd. (Kyoto, Japan). This database is described in detail elsewhere 17–19 . Briefly, the RWD database is an electronic medical records (EMR) database containing anonymized data of over 20.6 million patients from 190 medical institutions across Japan as of August 2020 20 .…”

“…These diagnoses, prescriptions, and procedures are coded using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) codes, the Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical (ATC) codes together with the Japan-specific YJ (Yakka Joho) codes (code according to the National Health Insurance Drug List), and the Japanese procedure codes. The advantage of the JMDC database is its ability to track an individual’s medical information across different healthcare facilities under the same health insurance, making it widely used for epidemiology studies in Japan (Fukasawa et al, 2023; Masuda et al, 2023; S. Yoshida et al, 2022).…”
