Clinical Efficiency of Two Sequences of Orthodontic Wires to Correct Crowding of the Lower Anterior Teeth

Abstract: This study compared time to correction of mandibular anterior crowding using two arch wire sequences, one with conventional nickel-titanium (NiTi) arch wires and the other with conventional and NiTi heat-activated arch wires. Twenty-two boys and girls (mean age: 16.68 ± 2.66) with moderate crowding (3–6 mm) were assigned randomly to one of two groups and followed up for five months (six assessments) when arch wires were changed. Time to crowding correction was analyzed statistically using the Kaplan-Meier meth… Show more

“…This decrease of psychological impact along with a reduction of the self-perception IOTN-AC index can be considered a consequence of the improvement of malocclusion that occurs in the first months of treatment. This period seems to play a fundamental role in the perception of dental aesthetics, as this period is the initial phase, during which 70–100% of dental crowding is resolved [20, 21]. These findings are in agreement with those of Prado et al who also observed such an improvement of psychological impact.…”

“…In contrast to the results of the present study and the studies mentioned above [710, 18], Serafim et al [11] concluded that heat-activated NiTi arch wires significantly alleviated the mandibular irregularity when compared with conventional NiTi archwires. However, the diameter of the archwires was changed monthly, and rectangular archwires were used at the third, fourth, and fifth months.…”

“…In two recent studies [9, 10], Cu-NiTi archwires were not found to be more efficient than NiTi archwires in leveling of mandibular anterior teeth. However, in contrast with the findings described above, one study [11] indicated more rapid correction of mandibular irregularity with heat-activated NiTi than NiTi archwires.…”
