Clinical consequences of non adherence to immunosuppressive medication in kidney transplant patients

Abstract: In recent decades, improvements in immunosuppressive medication have considerably increased the shortterm life expectancy of transplanted kidneys by reducing the incidence of acute rejections, primarily in the first year post-transplant. However, over the same period, long-term patient survival curves have been relatively flat [1,2]. Extending the perspectives of kidney transplant recipients is therefore a profound challenge and an important research priority [3][4][5].A major limiter of long-term survival is … Show more

“…Although many lung transplant recipients experience improved physical quality of life, psychological aspects of quality life appear to remain impaired in many patients (32). Psychological difficulties are an important factor in posttransplant management, as they have been shown to predict medication adherence in other populations (12,33–35), which is a crucial aspect of posttransplant survival (36,37). Results from the present study suggest that screening for depressive symptoms following transplantation may be important for the identification and treatment of posttransplant patients with elevated levels of distress.…”

“…5,6,13,14 Unfortunately, nonadherence to immunosuppressants is common among kidney transplantation patients and some reports have shown that kidney recipients are the most nonadherent among all transplantation patients. 6,15,16 Within this context, since adherence is multifactorial and is related to socioeconomic, individual, clinical and healthcare system variables, 7,11 exploration of which individual factors can have an influence on nonadherence is needed. Although many psychological dimensions contribute towards nonadherence, only a few of them have been extensively studied.…”
