Although there have been improvements in bracket systems precoated with adhesive, removal of adhesive remnants continues to be problematic. This study compared the hardness and maintainability of precoated adhesive with other commercial adhesives. Knoop hardness values were measured after light-or chemical-induced initial curing, immersion in distilled water at 37°C for 24 h and 1,000 and 10,000 thermal cycles after 24 h. Additionally, the forces required to move brackets by 0.5 mm were measured during bracket positioning, and brackets bonded to bovine enamel were examined by field-emission scanning electron microscopy. The Knoop hardness values of the precoated adhesives were lower than those of commercial resin composite adhesives, and hardness was dependent on the amount of filler in the resin matrix. The ability to maintain the device position may depend on the resin matrix composition. Precoated adhesives with less filler and more matrix material are light curable, and remnant resin may be easily removed.

This study evaluated the shear bond strengths of orthodontic brackets bonded to human premolars using five different combinations of flowable composites and one-step self-etching adhesives (n=12): (1) Adper Easy Bond+Filtek Supreme XT Flow; (2) Futurabond NR+Grandio Flow; (3) Clearfil S3 Bond+Clearfil Majesty Flow; (4) AdheSE One+Tetric EvoFlow; and (5) Transbond Plus Self Etching Primer+Transbond XT Light Cure Adhesive. After shear bond strength testing, adhesive remnant index (ARI) scores were given according to the amount of adhesive and resin remaining on the brackets. On shear bond strength, there were no statistically significant differences between Groups 2 and 4 and between Groups 3 and 5 (p>0.05). On ARI scores, the predominant ARI scores in Groups 1, 2, 3, and 5 were 4, 2, 5, and 4 respectively; in Group 4, they were 0 and 4. Results showed that some combinations of flowable composites and self-etching adhesives might not be suitable for orthodontic use due to their low shear bond strengths and high ARI scores -with the latter signaling the risk of damaging the enamel surface during debonding.

En un intento de ahorrar tiempo durante la adhesión de brackets, las casas comerciales han fabricado brackets metálicos y de cerámica con un recubrimiento previo de material adhesivo. El sistema adhesivo utilizado en los brackets con recubrimientos previo (APC) es similar en composición al sistem a adhesivo utilizado en los brackets convencionales sin recubrimiento. La diferencia es esencialmente en los porcentajes de los diversos ingredientes incorporados en el material adhesivo. El objetivo de este estudio es determinar si los brackets Clarity APC Plus (3M), tendrán mayor fuerza adhesiva que los brackets Clarity estándar (Transbond XT) frente a una fuerza de cizallamiento. Cuarenta y cinco primeros premolares inferiores humanos, recién extraídos, fueron montados en bases de acrílico y utilizados para adherir los dos tipos de brackets de acuerdo a las instrucciones del fabricante. La fuerza de cizallamiento fue realizada en la máquina de fuerzas universales MTS. Los resultados encontrados fueron: (1) los brackets Clarity APC Plus no generaron una mayor fuerza adhesiva que los brackets Clarity estándar frente a la fuerza de cizallamiento. (2) Los brackets Clarity APC Plus y Clarity estándar no tuvieron una diferencia estadísticamente significativa en cuanto a su adhesión frente a una fuerza de cizallamiento. (3)Todas las muestras de brackets-adhesivo, sometidas a una prueba de cizallamiento, generan una fuerza adhesiva clínicamente aceptable.
