Clinical Characteristics, Treatment and Survival Outcomes in Malignant Mesothelioma: Eighteen Years' Experience in Turkey

Abstract: Background: Malignant mesothelioma (MM) is an insidious tumor with poor prognosis, arising from mesothelial surfaces such as pleura, peritoneum and pericardium. We here aimed to evaluate the demographic, clinical, and radiological features of patients with MM followed in our center as well as their survival. “…Majority of MPM cases are inoperable at the time of diagnosis; thus, they were managed by using chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy (Ibrahim et al, 2013). Mortality rate is high in MPM cases, with more than half of deaths resulting from local complications (Berk et al, 2013). In MPM, 5-years survival rate was lower than 5%.…”

“…For many years, systemic chemotherapy was an important treatment option. Today, platinum-based combination chemotherapy regimens, particularly the combination of cisplatin and pemetrexed, are recommended because of their positive impact on the survival of mesothelioma patients [22,23]. In the present study, receiving systemic chemotherapy treatment had no effect on survival.…”
