Clinical characteristics of essential tremor in Mersin, Turkey

Abstract: We present the clinical findings of a group of largely undiagnosed and untreated population-dwelling ET cases that would not otherwise have come to neurological attention. Approximately one-half reported functional difficulty and psychiatric symptoms were over-represented in these ET cases compared with matched controls. These findings suggest that ET, as it exists in the population, is not a completely benign entity.

“…Traditionally, psychiatric symptoms have been regarded as occurring in response to debilitating neurological symptoms in ET [Chatterjee et al 2004]. However, other evidence suggests that depression might occur before the motor symptoms of ET manifest; in such situations this psychiatric disorder cannot be a secondary response to disability [Louis, 2010a;Louis et al 2007a;Dogu et al 2005].The pathophysiological basis of depression and anxiety in patients with ET is currently unknown and awaits prospective studies. Importantly, however, depression does not appear to account for cognitive deficits in ET [Li et al 2011].…”

“…Usual activities, such as eating, drinking, and dressing may be hindered by the abnormal movement, which thus causes functional disability and social embarrassment to a varying degree. In addition, patients with ET are more likely to suffer from depression and anxiety than are controls [7]. Hence,…”

“…Essential tremor (ET) is highly prevalent in human populations [1][2][3][4][5] . Milder action tremor of the hands is also widespread and is far more common than ET [6] .…”
