Clinical characteristics of COVID-19 in Saudi Arabia: A national retrospective study

Abstract: Background The global battle to contain the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic rages on. Previous studies described the clinical characteristics of COVID-19, but knowledge gaps remain in the Middle East region. Identifying these features will help in mapping the disease and guiding pandemic management. A multi-center, retrospective cross-sectional study was initiated to describe the demographic data, clinical characteristics, and outcomes of COVID-19 cases across all the regions of… Show more

“…In addition, the LOS varied significantly between countries even before the pandemic [ 11 ]. In Saudi Arabia, the rate of hospitalization among all confirmed COVID-19 cases during March 2020 was 71.6% according to Alsofayan and colleagues, but the mortality rate was as low as 0.65% [ 12 ]. This high reported rate of hospitalization among COVID-19 cases may exacerbate the cost burden of viral respiratory infections in a country that was deeply affected by the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) in 2012, and resulted in a huge financial burden with an estimated direct medical cost per patient of SAR 48,551.36 (United States dollars (USD) 12,947.03) [ 13 ].…”

“…Similar to SARS [ 14 ] and MERS [ 15 ], patient’s age, comorbid conditions and certain laboratory abnormalities were associated with poor in-hospital outcomes in COVID-19 patients [ 16 ]. Underlying chronic medical conditions are commonly reported in hospitalized COVID-19 patients with variable proportions between studies probably due to variable hospitalization criteria (94% in USA, 77% in UK, 23% in China, 20% in KSA) [ 17 19 ]. COVID-19 fatality rate among the hospitalized cases in this cohort is within the reported 12–15% range [ 20 , 21 ].…”

“…The incubation period ranges between two and 14 days [15]. Generally, the mid-value of 7 days of the incubation period is considered but in the case of Saudi Arabia, the median incubation period is identified as six days [16]. The inverse of the incubation period is known as the incubation rate.…”
