“…One of the first case series published in China on 40 COVID-19 inpatients reported that the main symptom was dyspnoea (55%) while diarrhoea was described in 3% of cases only; the median age of subjects was 49 years [ 1 ]. Other Chinese studies reported different percentage of gastrointestinal symptoms [ 20 , 21 ]: Zhang et al reported fever (91%), cough (75%), fatigue (75%) and gastrointestinal symptoms (39%) as the most common clinical manifestations in 140 hospitalized COVID -19 patients while Wang et al found a gastrointestinal onset rate of 10.1% in a group of 138 hospitalized patients with a median age of 56 years. Cheung et al, in their meta-analysis of 60 studies involving 4,243 COVID-19 patients from six countries, found digestive symptoms in 17.6% of the patients with specific rates of anorexia (26.8%), diarrhoea (12.5%), nausea/vomiting (10.2%) and abdominal pain/discomfort (9.2%).…”

“…This “China Issue” of Allergy highlights the latest progress and contributions by Chinese scholars in improving our understanding of the COVID‐19 epidemiology and pathogenesis, and in the diagnosis of asthma and allergic diseases during the pandemic. Zheng et al reported the clinical characteristics of allergic rhinitis (AR) patients in 13 metropolitan cities of China and outlined the regional differences in the pathogenesis of AR in China 1 . Shi et al also showed that the production and release of cold‐inducible RNA‐binding protein (CIRP) was upregulated in the nasal epithelial cells and macrophages, contributing to edema formation in both eosinophilic and non‐eosinophilic chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) by inducing matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF‐A) production in these cells 2 .…”

“…Allergic rhinitis (AR) has developed into a global concern and affected 10% to 40% of the world population. 1 Numerous studies have indicated that the increased incidence of AR is associated with social stress and western lifestyle. 2 , 3 The misalignment between the endogenous biological clock and the individual's daily activities in modern society, such as artificial light during the long night, shift work, or travel across time zones, might influence and alter the process of allergy.…”
