Clinical characteristics and viral shedding kinetics of 38 asymptomatic patients with coronavirus disease 2019

Abstract: This study aims to investigate the clinical characteristics and viral shedding kinetics of asymptomatic patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The data of 38 asymptomatic patients positive for SARS-CoV-2 nucleic acid were collected from February to March 2020 in Tuanfeng County, Huanggang, Hubei, China. The epidemiology, laboratory examination, chest imaging, viral nucleic acid test results, clinical characteristics, and viral shedding time were summarized in this retrospective study. … Show more

“…The proportion of individuals with abnormal CT features in patients with asymptomatic infection at the screening point was 55% (95% CI: 43–68%, I 2 = 86.2%, k = 18, n = 491; Figure 3 ) ( 20 – 23 , 31 33 , 36 , 38 , 42 , 44 47 , 49 , 50 , 56 , 59 ). In the sensitivity analysis, we found one study that affected the proportion by over 3%.…”

“…In addition, the ability to sequence SARS-CoV-2 RNA from saliva was previously evidenced 31 . Finally, the pooling of samples (i.e., testing a few samples at once) may allow for the detection of SARS-Cov-2 with sufficient diagnostic accuracy [32][33][34] . Previous studies in NH workers employing the same methodology as the present cohort study have estimated a reduction of sensitivity at 0.3% due to the pooling (i.e., testing three samples at once) 21 .…”

“…It is worth noting that as the main source of transmission, asymptomatic infections have insidious characteristics, which brings great difficulties to epidemiological investigations and tracing of earliest infections and close contacts. Therefore, this type of group is also the key populations that cause the large-scale propagation of the virus [4] . The 10 cases of asymptomatic infection in this study were analyzed for their epidemiological characteristics: white blood cell counts were mostly normal, with only 1 abnormal case; lymphocyte counts were mostly low, with only 1 case higher than the normal range; the level of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein was mostly normal, with only 1 case out of the normal range, and the creatinine level in all cases was within the normal range.…”
