Clinical characteristics and outcomes for gastric cancer patients aged 18–30 years

Abstract: Background There is little known about the clinicopathological features and the predictors of survival in extremely young adult patients aged 18-30 years. The aim of this study was to identify clinicopathological features and clinical outcomes for the overall population and for a resectable subgroup of gastric cancer patients aged 18-30 years. Methods From January 2004 to December 2010, 207 patients aged between 18 and 30 years old were diagnosed with gastric cancer and treated at the Asan Medical Center. Clini… Show more

“…4 Unlike the characteristics of advanced-stage cancer patients, the percentage of tumors located in the lower third for patients at the early stage were 71.9%, which was higher than that reported in Japan, 3,6 China, 10 and Korea. 9 The percentages of tumors located in the middle and upper thirds were reported 41.4% and 20.1% in Japan, 6 similar to that reported in China (60.0% in the middle and upper thirds). 13 The tumors of young gastric cancer patients at an advanced stage were located more commonly in the upper or middle third, compared with that in young EGC patients who underwent ESD.…”

“…1 However, most previous studies on young gastric cancer patients showed a female predominance, with a lower male-to-female sex ratio (0.54:1∼1.26:1). 3,6,9,10,13 The male-to-female sex ratio of young gastric patients who underwent ESD was 0.77:1 in our study. This corresponds to findings in young gastric patients with not only advanced stage but also early stage of disease.…”

“…The survival rate of patients with GC remains relatively poor, since the majority of cases are already in the late stage at diagnosis, and surgery and chemotherapy result in an unsatisfactory prognosis. Serum tumor markers are useful for diagnosis, for predicting survival rates and for monitoring recurrence following surgery (2,3). Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), carbohydrate antigen (CA) 19-9 and CA72-4 are the most frequently used clinical markers.…”
