Clinical assessment of the efficacy of photodynamic therapy in the treatment of oral lichen planus

Abstract: The study objective was clinical assessment of the efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT) in the treatment of oral lichen planus (OLP). There were 23 patients aged 31–82 included in the study with oral lichen planus diagnosed clinically and histopathologically. In all patients photodynamic therapy was performed with the use of chlorin e6 (Photolon®), containing 20 % chlorin e6 and 10 % dimethyl sulfoxide as a photosensitizer. PDT was performed using a semiconductor laser, with power up to 300 mW and a waveleng… Show more

“…Extended use of corticosteroids for chronic OLP may have certain local and systemic complications, which includes opportunistic candidiasis, mucosal atrophy, adrenal insufficiency, gastrointestinal disorders, hypertension, and diabetes . To surmount the side effects of steroid therapy, photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been proposed as an alternative treatment strategy for OLP …”

“…Chlorin e6, owing to the photosensitizer character has been widely used in the area of photodynamic treatment, including clinical studies [21,22]. Sharing the same mechanism with PDT, sonosensitizer exposed to ultrasound sonication generated reactive oxygen species (ROS) [23], which results in destroying bacteria.…”
