Clinical applications of laser speckle contrast imaging: a review

Abstract: When a biological tissue is illuminated with coherent light, an interference pattern will be formed at the detector, the so-called speckle pattern. Laser speckle contrast imaging (LSCI) is a technique based on the dynamic change in this backscattered light as a result of interaction with red blood cells. It can be used to visualize perfusion in various tissues and, even though this technique has been extensively described in the literature, the actual clinical implementation lags behind. We provide an overview… Show more

“…LSCI as a technique is a lot more recent and has so far only been used in a few studies with human patients [56][57][58][59][60][61]. During the last 5 years, LSCI has however received increasing attention and is now being used more and more within different areas.…”

“…During the last 5 years, LSCI has however received increasing attention and is now being used more and more within different areas. So far, LSCI has seen little use in human burn research [61]. Most studies using LSCI have so far been animal studies, and most studies in human patients ever published are contained within this thesis.…”

“…Thus, when the particle moves within the tissue, provokes a variation in this speckle display causing the blurring of speckle patterns. 3 When the variations are triggered by the moving red blood cells (RBCs), this blurring can be accompanied by the blood flow. Starting as a slow, analog research tool, LSCI systems nowadays have gained rapid popularity to record blood flow in (near) real-time.…”
