Clinical application of an enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay detecting hepatoma‐specific γ‐glutamyltransferase

Abstract: The sandwich ELISA system showed good reliability and reproducibility, and using the measurement, we found that serum DSA-GGT was a valuable marker of HCC, as a usable complementary to AFP. The sensitivity for identifying HCC could be significantly improved by combining DSA-GGT and AFP, and the combination could be used in large-scale screening for HCC in susceptible individuals.

“…The reason for this is not clear, although both groups had low AFP values compared to most larger tumor patients. High AST levels are also reported as a poor prognostic factor (29) as have GGTP levels (30, 31); however survival data was not available for this cohort. The correlation matrix showed a significant correlation for platelets with tumor size, but less of a correlation with tumor number or presence of PVT.…”

“…A second possibility is that the liver parameters actually have HCC-modifying functions. Thus, albumin has been shown to subdue HCC cell growth [33]; HCC-specific GGT isoforms are membrane glycoproteins that catalyze the first enzymatic step in the metabolism of glutathione and is important in maintaining intracellular cysteine and glutathione levels [34][35][36], ALKP might modulate cancer drug resistance [37] as might bilirubin [38,39]. Furthermore, platelet factors have HCC-stimulatory properties [24].…”

“…Persistent inflammation in hepatitis activity and maintained necrosis-induced hepatocyte regeneration may lead to chromosomal damage and increased the risk for malignant transformation after hepatic resection (Poon et al 2000). In addition, HS-GGT (hepatoma specific GGT bands), a component of serum GGT by HCC tissue, is useful in diagnose of subclinical HCC (Xu et al 1992;Tsutsumi et al 1996;Wang et al 2009). The subclinical HCC cannot be easily discovered before and during operation, and it may reoccur after operation.…”

“…The subclinical HCC cannot be easily discovered before and during operation, and it may reoccur after operation. However, HS-GGT only accounts for 2.2% to 9.7% of total serum GGT, most of which is secreted by liver (Yao et al 2000;Wang et al 2009). Therefore, high GGT level might indicate increased inflammation, fibrosis and liver lobular structural disorder.…”
