“…A number of studies have been carried out to elucidate the value of operative versus conservative treatment of ruptures of the lateral ligaments o f the ankle (Brostrom 1966, Freeman 1965, Hansen et al 1979, Kolind-S~rensen 1975, Prins 1978, but only a few of these studies have been prospective and controlled. Freeman (1965) obtained better results with conservative rather than operative treatment and found no difference between the results obtained by plaster cast and by early mobilization.…”

The diagnosis was made when the difference in talar tilt between the injured and uninjured foot, on radiographs taken at the time of the accident, was 6 or more degrees .…”

“…The clinical follow-up was described in our previous study (Hansen et al 1979). The radiological follow-up consisted of ordinary radiography of the ankle joint, an inversion stress exposure , and an exposure for anterior drawer sign (Olerud 1967).…”
