Clinical and radiological outcome of the treatment of osteonecrosis of the femoral head using the osteonecrosis intervention implant

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical and radiological outcome of the treatment of osteonecrosis of the femoral head by implantation of an osteonecrosis intervention rod. In this retrospective study the follow-up of 19 patients with 23 osteonecrotic femoral heads treated with implantation of an osteonecrosis intervention implant was assessed. From 19 patients with 23 necrotic femoral heads, there were 13 cases in which a total hip replacement was necessary. This implies a survival rate of 44% afte… Show more

“…[32][33][34] Since joint preserving procedures for advanced stages of AVN are limited, early diagnosis and effective treatment are necessary. 35,36 The vasoactive, stable prostacyclin analogue iloprost is approved for therapy of critical limb ischemia due to peripheral arteriosclerotic obliterative disease and diabetic angiopathy as well as an inhalative for patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension. 37 Our group and others use iloprost for the treatment of early stages of AVN.…”

“…The p.G1170S mutation, in contrast with the most missense mutations, only leads to milder phenotypes confined to the hip joint, without involvement of spinal or ocular abnormalities [5][6][7]. Furthermore, the phenotypes of p.G1170S were ANFH/ hip OA/LCP disease, which were thought to be diseases with multiple aetiologies [14,15] and requiring various treatment strategies [16][17][18]. Hence, studying the histological and ultrastructural characteristics of mutant cartilage with the p.G1170S mutation will help to understand the pathogenesis of this new type II collagenopathy, as well as ANFH/hip OA/LCP disease.…”

“…There have been attempts to use various adjunctive therapies with this procedure such as the following: (1) bone grafting [13,23,26]; (2) addition of mesenchymal cells [13,23,26]; and (3) tantalum rod insertion [9,11,[36][37][38][39][40][41].…”
