“…En una revisión del Instituto Nacional de Cancerología de Bogotá, del 2000 al 2008 se reportaron 39 pacientes, de los cuales 16 correspondían a localización gástrica (41 %) (9). Para Flores-Funes en España, en una revisión de 2002 a 2015 con 66 pacientes, 43 casos (65 %) se encontraban localizados en el estómago (10).…”

“…In relation to the topography of the lesions, the gastric fundus is the most frequent, close to 25%, followed by the body and antrum, although in other series the first place is occupied by the gastric body. 7,8 With regard to diagnosis, GIST are part of the lesions known as subepithelial lesions (LSE), originating in the deep layer of the digestive tract. This eventuality makes diagnosis difficult since in general upper endoscopy and biopsies of the overlying mucosa do not provide a definitive histological diagnosis.…”

“…GIST arises in the submucosa of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract but can also arise outside the GI tract, from the mesentery and greater omentum (extravisceral) [6]- [8]. Carcinogenesis of GIST arises in the interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC) and in the myenteric plexus of the GI due to a mutation of the kinase receptor (KIT, also known as CD117) and the platelet-derived growth factor A (PDGFA) gene, leading to activation of the tyrosine kinase receptor [9], [10]. In histology, the 3 types of GIST include spindle cell type (70%), epithelioid type (20%) and mixed type (10%) [10], [11].…”
