Clinical and Pathological Aspects of Experimental Oleander (Nerium oleander) Toxicosis in Sheep

Abstract: Dried Nerium oleander leaves at single lethal dose of 110 mg/kg body weight were administered orally to six native male sheep. Clinical signs of toxicosis in sheep began to appear about 30 min after receiving the oleander and included decrease of the heart rate followed by cardiac pauses and tachyarrhythmias; ruminal atony, mild to moderate tympany, abdominal pain, polyuria and polakiuria. Electrocardiography revealed bradycardia, atrio-ventricular blocks, depression of S-T segments, ventricular premature beat… Show more

“…leaves extract. Infiltration of mononuclear inflammatory cells into the portal space with scattered necrosis of hepatocytes in H&E stained sections was registered with an oral administration of dried oleander leaves (110 mg/kg) [46, 62]. Maximum recruitment of ED1 + cells was noted after 24 h of N.O.…”

“…All parts of oleander are toxic containing oleandrin, oleandrigenin, and other cardiac glycosides [45]. Toxic exposure of humans and different species of domestic animals to N. oleander cardenolides occurs commonly throughout the geographic regions where this plant grows [46, 47]. N.O.…”

“…Efforts have been made by few investigators to evaluate the toxicological aspects of various parts of Nerium species on few organisms-fish (Tiwari and Singh 2003, 2005Singh and Singh 2002), mammals (Oryan et al 1996;Longford and Boor 1996;Ada et al 2001;Haeba et al 2002;Aslani et al 2004;Saravanan et al 2004;Soto-Blanco et al 2006;Barbosa et al 2007), insects (el-Shazly et al 1996), and molluscs (Singh et al1993;Panigrahi and Raut 1994;Wang et al 2006).…”

“…One plant that is found in some CAMS is oleander, which is extremely toxic and has produced deaths and poisoning in various animal species (Aslani et al, 2004;Woods et al, 2004;Haeba et al, 2002;Meyer et al, 1993;Galey et al, 1996;Eddleston et al, 2000b). However, consuming honey from oleander nectar and taking homeopathic medicines to curb binge eating, for example, allow many products to be sold as diet aids.…”
