Clinical and Nutritional Impact of a Semi-Elemental Hydrolyzed Whey Protein Diet in Patients with Active Crohn’s Disease: A Prospective Observational Study

Abstract: Background: Malnourishment is a common complication in patients with Crohn’s disease. Methods: An observational, prospective study was conducted to assess the nutritional status, disease activity, and stool frequency at baseline and after 12 weeks of treatment with a semi-elemental diet in patients with active Crohn’s disease. Results: A total of 144 patients with Crohn’s disease were included. The nutritional status improved after treatment, resulting in 76.1% of patients at low risk of malnourishment, 20.4% … Show more

“…Finally, blood protein levels may be a surrogate marker for nitrogen absorption capacity. Since OHN supplement contained half the amount of protein compared with immunonutrition and total protein, albumin, and prealbumin mean values were comparable in both study groups at postoperative day 5, we can speculate on an optimization (around 2-fold) in protein absorption associated with OHN supplements, which is in line with previous studies with the same supplement [ 27 , 28 ].…”

“…CD patients could suffer from malnourishment. 26 We observed that TP among the three age groups was different, which suggested that we should pay attention to the nutritional status for CD patients.…”

“…Similarly, a randomized controlled study in Japanese patients who had esophagectomy for esophageal cancer reported that compared with those who received SPF, patients who received SEF were less likely to develop diarrhea and more likely to improve their nutrition status. 14 This was further supported by two later studies by Sanz-Paris et al 15 and Ferreiro et al, 16 who found improved nutrition status and tolerability with SEF in patients with oncology treatment-related diarrhea and Crohn's disease. 16,17 Based on these findings, we hypothesized that early use of SEF in ICU patients with high risk of GI intolerance may be less costly to a healthcare system, given SEF's effect on reducing feeding interruption, thereby shortening the length of ICU stay and lowering the total ICU cost.…”
