Clinical and microbiological characteristics of Klebsiella pneumoniae liver abscess in East China

Abstract: BackgroundKlebsiella pneumoniae has been the dominant pathogen for liver abscesses in several Asian countries. Although the prevalence of K. pneumoniae liver abscess (KLA) in mainland China is increasing recently, the clinical and microbiological characteristics of KLA in China have not been elucidated.MethodsClinical and microbiology characteristics of 45 consecutive patients with KLA from a tertiary teaching hospital in China between June 2008 and June 2012 were retrospectively evaluated.ResultsVast majority… Show more

“…A Chinese report described that rmpA was found in all K. pneumoniae isolates causing PLA (Qu et al, 2015). In the present study, 57.1% (12/21) of the carbapenem-resistant HMKP isolates harbored rmpA .…”

“…The majority of Kp liver abscess isolates belong to a small number of clonal groups (CGs) [14][15][16][17] defined by multi-locus sequence typing (MLST) 18 . In particular, CG23 was shown to account for 37-64% isolates in Taiwan 16 , Singapore 19 and mainland China 15,20 . CG23 Kp are associated with the highly serum-resistant K1 capsule and a number of virulence factors; the genotoxin colibactin, microcin E492, and the iron-scavenging siderophores aerobactin, yersiniabactin and salmochelin 1,21,22 .…”

“…However, not all hvKp strains are hypermucoviscous since non-hypermucoviscous hvKP have been reported (Tan et al, 2014; Qu et al, 2015). Serotyping and sequence typing of hvKp have been widely reported.…”
