Clinical and Microbiologic Study of Periodontitis Associated With Kindler Syndrome

Abstract: In the Kindler group, periodontitis had an onset in early teenage years and progressed more rapidly compared to non-Kindler individuals of the same geographic and ethnic group. Clinical and microbiological findings suggest atypical periodontitis in Kindler patients. We propose to include Kindler syndrome in the category of medical disorders predisposing to destructive periodontal disease.

“…Only few case reports of patients with Kindler syndrome describe their oral features 34,[85][86][87][88][89][90] . The evidence suggests that patients with Kindler syndrome can present with fragile mucosa, microstomia, and partial vestibule obliteration, although microstomia was not identified in all patients with Kindler syndrome 34,85,86 . Special attention has been given to periodontal disease, which was initially reported in two patients 34,88 .…”

“…Special attention has been given to periodontal disease, which was initially reported in two patients 34,88 . Thereafter, a series of 18 patients was compared to healthy controls, revealing that patients with Kindler syndrome have a higher prevalence (72% vs 46%), earlier onset, and faster progression of periodontitis 85 . Squamous cell carcinoma of the hard palate has also been reported in a patient with this condition 86 .…”
