Clinical and genetic characteristics of Chinese pediatric patients with chronic granulomatous disease

Abstract: BackgroundChronic granulomatous disease (CGD) is a rare disease in China, and very little large‐scale studies have been conducted to date. We aimed to investigate the clinical and genetic features of CGD in Chinese pediatric patients.MethodsPediatric patients with CGD from Beijing Children's Hospital, Capital Medical University, China, were enrolled from January 2006 to December 2016.ResultsA total of 159 pediatric patients with CGD were enrolled. The median age of clinical onset was 1.4 months, and 73% (116/1… Show more

“…However, many patients had documented breakthrough infections even while being continued on prophylactic medications. Overall mortality in our cohort was 38.5% which is similar to reports from other countries such as Mexico and China ( 41 , 50 , 56 , 57 ). Our mortality rates are, however, much higher than those reported from the USA, Iran, and European countries.…”

“…This report confirms our previous finding that the most common form of CGD in Jordan is the AR type (21). The high frequency of AR-CGD appears also in Tunisia, Egypt, Turkey, Iran, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and Israel because of the high rate of consanguineous marriage in these countries (16,19,23,24,(48)(49)(50)(51) and it is in contrast to the published literature from USA, Europe, South America, China, and Japan, in which X-CGD is the main genetic form (4, 5,17,[25][26][27][52][53][54]. The population in Jordan amounted from 5.3 million in 2004 to 10.2 million in 2020, and is composed of a variety of ethnic groups, the majority being Arabs.…”

“…Our results show the predominance of AR-CGD in the Turkish families investigated. In European series and in China, 68-89% of CGD cases have been reported to be X-linked [8,17]. However, AR-CGD is the predominant form in Turkey and other Mediterranean regions because of the high rate of consanguineous marriages [7][8][9][10].…”
