Clinical and dermoscopic features of atypical Spitz tumors: A multicenter, retrospective, case-control study

Abstract: Background Few studies have described the clinical and dermoscopic features of atypical Spitz tumors (AST). Objective To describe the clinical and dermoscopic features of a series of AST as compared to those of conventional Spitz nevi (SN). Methods Multicenter, retrospective, case-control study, analyzing the clinical and dermoscopic characteristics of 55 AST and 110 SN that were excised and diagnosed histopathologically. “…The most common vascular abnormality observed in all examined patients were dotted vessels (23/68, 33.8%), followed by linear serpentine vessels (16/68, 23.5%). Dotted vessels were previously described in psoriasis, Spitz nevi, and melanoma . In our study, they occurred in 13/26 (50.0%) patients with PV, 2/17 (11.8%) patients with PF, 3/17 (33.8%) patients with BP, and 5/8 (62.5%) patients with DH (Kruskal–Wallis test, P = 0.01).…”

“…With respect to ASTs, a recent study investigated dermoscopic findings in a series of 55 ASTs compared with 110 Spitz naevi . According to the results, the vast majority of ASTs are dermoscopically typified by a multicomponent pattern and would thus be clinically interpreted as suspicious for melanoma.…”
