“…6 and 7, and are similar to those described from earlier years (König-Langlo et al, 1998). Figure 6 shows that surface temperatures ranged from around zero during the summer months to almost −50 • C during the late spring.…”

“…noaa.gov/pub/archives/gdas1) were used as input, and the model was run every hour in backward mode for 5 days at 0, 200, and 500 m above the model ground level. Three typical situations prevail at DDU: strong katabatic winds flowing out from the Antarctic ice sheet situated south of the station, pure marine air masses, or continental/marine mixed air masses with easterly winds due to the arrival near the site of lowpressure systems (König-Langlo et al, 1998). Oceanic origin was attributed to air masses having traveled at least 1 day over the ocean and less than 3 days out of 5 over the highaltitude Antarctic plateau.…”

“…A detailed description of the sampling site ("Labo 3") has been given by Preunkert et al (2013) while the climatology of this coastal station has been detailed by König-Langlo et al (1998). The average surface air temperature ranges from −1 • C in January to −17 • C in winter, with a mean annual temperature of −12 • C. The annual mean surface wind speed is 10 m s −1 , with no clear seasonal variations.…”

“…If the midwinter low-ozone values are genuine, why are they not observed in early winter at Neumayer during the many years of observation of surface ozone in the 1990s (WDCGG, 2003), the more so as Neumayer is only 700 km NE of Halley on the same Weddell Sea coast, and the relative wind roses are almost identical (Konig-Langlo et al, 1998)? Perhaps this is because the area of frequent open water in winter near Neumayer is only about 1/10 that near Halley (Arrigo and van Dijken, 2003) -there is less potential for frost-flower formation close to Neumayer in winter.…”
