Climatology of landfalling tropical cyclones in Bangladesh 1877–2003

Abstract: Bangladesh is highly susceptible to tropical cyclones. Unfortunately, there is a dearth of climatological studies on the tropical cyclones of Bangladesh. The Global Tropical Cyclone Climatic Atlas (GTCCA) lists historical storm track information for all the seven tropical cyclone ocean basins including the North Indian Ocean. Using GIS, tropical cyclones that made landfall in Bangladesh during 1877-2003 are identified and examined from the climatological perspective. For the convenience of study, the coast of … Show more

“…As cyclones are a common yearly occurrence in Bangladesh, only those categorized as severe cyclones/cyclonic storms, with wind speeds over 88 km/hr, were included in the study (Choudhury, 1992;Islam and Peterson, 2009). The participants were categorized as exposed to cyclones (yes/no) if they were between the ages of 0-2 years or not when a severe cyclone occurred (based on the month of their birth).…”

“…Situated in the world's largest river system delta, the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna, Bangladesh is vulnerable to coastal hazards. Its coasts, like other tropical deltas, are regularly battered by the landfall of episodic cyclones (Islam and Peterson 2008;Karim and Mimura 2008;Knapp et al 2010). Recent storm surges associated with these cyclones, such as Sidr in 2007 and Aila in 2009, have left a trail of destruction and inundated large areas with sea water in the southwest coastal region of Bangladesh (Kibria et al 2015).…”

“…For the slope factor map, class 3 (3.096963996-5.663019876°) is assigned to a membership grade of 1, which exists in many landslide occurrences (16). In fact, landslides are distributed among all of the slope classes, however classes 2 and 4 were associated with high landslide occurrences (Table 3).…”

“…The changing global climate is also posing a serious threat in the region, and the likelihood of increased precipitation could worsen landslide hazards in Bangladesh [13]. CCC is also located in a high-risk earthquake [14,15] and cyclones/wind storms [16] zone, which could trigger more landslide events. A landslide is the movement of a mass of soil or earth, down to a slope, when shear stress exceeds the strength of the material [17].…”
