Climatological Characteristics of Cold Fronts and Their Impacts on Air Quality in Cold Seasons Over the Eastern China

Abstract: The eastern China is one of the regions that are most populous, economically fast-growing, as well as severely disturbed by air pollution problems. Regional haze is particularly frequent and intense in cold seasons and often leads to great adverse impacts on human health and societal activities (

“…Similarly, Figures S6 and S7 in Supporting Information display the evolution of no‐typhoon events, which are typical high‐pressure‐induced pollution events (Xue, Zhou, et al., 2022). Before episodes, NCP is dominated by the center of a high‐pressure system with weak wind and strong subsidence, which is unfavorable for pollutant dispersion.…”

“…Li et al, 2022;. As anthropogenic emission remains relatively unchanged over a period of time, the evolutions of PM 2.5 pollution events in NCP are mainly controlled by the variations of meteorological factors associated with mesoscale or large-scale weather systems (An et al, 2019;Xue, Zhou, et al, 2022).…”

“…The Yangtze River Delta (YRD) is one of the developed and highly populated regions in China featuring intense anthropogenic emission, massive fossil fuel consumption, and dense agricultural activities (Huang et al., 2016). Meanwhile, the cyclonic and anticyclonic weather systems have time scales of about 3–7 days over here and the attendant cold fronts occur more than 60% days of the cold season (Xue et al., 2022), which provide sufficient power and broad vertical pathways for regional transport (Tian et al., 2019; Yang et al., 2021). Coupled with its adjacency to heavily polluted North China Plain (NCP), the YRD faces dual challenges of regional transport and local accumulation of pollution featuring certain periodicity and is prone to complex pollution characterized by mixed sources and multi‐layer structures (Ding et al., 2016; Zhou et al., 2018).…”
