Arthropod-borne pathogens are medically important because of their ability to cause diseases in their hosts. The purpose of this study was to detect the occurrence of Ehrlichia spp., piroplasmids and Hepatozoon spp. in dogs with anemia and thrombocytopenia in southern Brazil. EDTA-whole blood was collected from 75 domestic dogs presenting anemia or/and thrombocytopenia from Guarapuava, state of Paraná, Brazil. DNA samples were subjected to conventional PCR assays for Ehrlichia spp. (dsb), piroplasmids (18S rRNA) and Hepatozoon spp. (18S rRNA), followed by sequencing and phylogenetic analyses. Among the 75 dogs, one (1.33%) was positive for Hepatozoon sp. and six (8%) were positive for piroplasmids in 18S rRNA cPCR assays. None of the dogs showed positive results in Ehrlichia spp.-cPCR targeting dsb gene. The phylogenetic analyses revealed that three piroplasm sequences were clustered with Rangellia vitalii, while one sequence was grouped with B. vogeli. The only sequence obtained from Hepatozoon spp.-PCR protocol was pooled with H. canis. Therefore, there is urgent need for differential molecular diagnosis of the two piroplasm species cited as etiological agents in clinical cases of canine hemoparasitic diseases, given the higher pathogenic potential of R. vitalii than of B. vogeli.

RESUMOO estudo hidrológico das precipitações permite estimar, entre outras características, o tempo de recorrência de determinada chuva -a partir de bases históricas e cálculos probabilísticos -, que assume importância principalmente quando se trata de eventos extremos. Sendo assim, o objetivo do presente trabalho foi estimar a precipitação máxima diária provável para os períodos de retorno de 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 e 100 anos segundo a distribuição de Gumbel, com base no método dos momentos, e analisar a espacialização desses eventos para todo o estado da Bahia, Brasil. Para isso, utilizou-se a série histórica das 28 estações pluviométricas do Instituto Nacional de Meteorologia (INMET) de 1961 a 2015, aplicando o método de Gumbel por meio dos parâmetros obtidos das equações dos momentos, sendo os dados testados pelo método de Kolmogorov-Smirnov. Para a espacialização dos resultados, foi utilizado o ArcGIS 10.3 por intermédio da interpolação pela Ponderação do Inverso da Distância (IDW, na sigla em inglês) para cada tempo de retorno. As porções litorânea e central do estado têm maior predisposição à ocorrência de eventos extremos. O método dos momentos possibilitou estimar os parâmetros utilizados na equação de Gumbel, sendo possível espacializar e analisar as precipitações máximas para o estado estudado. Thus, the objective of the present work was to estimate the probable maximum daily precipitation for the return periods of 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 years according to the Gumbel distribution, using the moments method, and to analyze the spatialization of these events for the entire state of Bahia, Brazil.The study used the historical series of the 28 rainfall stations of INMET from 1961 to 2015, applying the Gumbel method through the parameters obtained from the equations of the moments, being the data tested by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov method. For the spatialization of the results, ArcGIS 10.3 was used by means of Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW) interpolation for each return time. The coastal and central portion of the state is more predisposed to the occurrence of extreme events.The moments methods allowed to estimate the parameters used in the Gumbel equation, making it possible to spatialize and analyze the maximum precipitations for the studied state.

Identification of Homogeneous Rainfall Zones During Grain Crops in Paraná, Brazil

The aim of this study is to identify homogeneous rainfall zones in the winter and summer 1 st and 2 nd crops, in the state of Paraná, Brazil. The zones were defined by clustering using the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm to transform seasonal rainfall series. Monthly average rainfall data collected from 157 weather stations for 20 years (1996 to 2015) were employed. The results show that the number of homogeneous zones varied among growing seasons. The summer crop presented two clusters, with rainfall averages of 1489 and 1925 mm; the second crop presented four clusters, with averages of 1849, 1004, 1454, and 1182 mm; and the winter crop had three clusters, with averages of 969, 1498, and 1171 mm. Clustering was a useful instrument to identify geographical regions with similar rainfall regimes during different growing seasons in the state of Paraná. Rainfall distribution was more homogeneous in the summer crop. In all crops analyzed, the clusters with the lowest rainfall rate were present in the northwestern, northern center, and northern pioneer of the state of Paraná, whereas the clusters with the highest rainfall rate were found in the coastal regions.
