Climatic Uncertainty in the Mediterranean Basin and Its Possible Relevance to Important Economic Sectors

Abstract: The Mediterranean Basin is among the densest populated regions of the world with forecasts for a further population increase in the coming decades. Agriculture and tourism are two main economic activities of this region. Both activities depend highly on climate and weather conditions. Climate and weather in turn, present a large variability both in space and in time which results in different uncertainty types. Any change in weather and or climate conditions in the coming decades due to climate change may incr… Show more

“…Furthermore, among the main outcomes of their study, we nd that all the regions of this climate type, except for the case of North America, have dried and will continue to do so as the time passes. A recent analysis on the Mediterranean basin is provided also by Kutiel (2019). In this work, the climate of the region, assessed through atmospheric pressure, temperature and precipitation levels, is found to be characterized by a huge degree of spatial and temporal variability.…”

“…In addition, climate models consistently project less precipitation for the basin (IPCC 2022). The Mediterranean Basin countries will experience a decrease in tourism due to increasing temperature extremes and the occurrence of extreme climate events (IPCC 2022;Kutiel 2019;Dos Santos et al 2020). It is crucial to identify these effects to facilitate adaptation and mitigation efforts because climate change has a significant impact on visitors by exacerbating thermal discomfort (IPCC 2021; Zinzi and Carnielo 2017) requiring reliable information for tourists and organizers.…”
