Climatic stability and contemporary human impacts affect the genetic diversity and conservation status of a tropical palm in the Atlantic Forest of Brazil

Abstract: of genetic diversity in E. edulis is the result of historical instability during the mid-Holocene and recent anthropogenic impacts, mainly those that affect important ecological process such as seed dispersal. Thus, an efficient plan for species conservation must account for human impacts and environmental suitability and also assess the genetic diversity of seedlings and adults in fragmented landscapes.

“…Several historical and contemporary factors may influence the genetic diversity in natural populations. Species’ establishment and/or persistence in a particular region depends on the suitability of that habitat, which is strongly related to historical factors such as climate and geological events and may therefore imprint a signal in the species genetic pool over time (Hewitt, ; Carvalho et al., ). Carvalho et al.…”

“…Carvalho et al. (), studying Euterpe edulis Mart., a plant from AF, found that genetic diversity was higher in sites with historically stable climate. Other research noted high genetic diversity in areas considered a refuge for natural populations in the AF during the Quaternary climatic oscillations (Carnaval et al., ; Leite et al., ).…”

“…Additionally, some populations of this palm have low genetic diversity because of the absence of large seed dispersers. In contrast, populations of this species in areas with a stable climatic history have higher genetic diversity (Carvalho et al, 2017).…”

“…CSAs ensure the survival of different species by providing them with suitable habitats over time (Carnaval et al, 2009). CSA, in combination with the presence of large-sized seed dispersers, was important for maintain genetic diversity of Euterpe edulis, a key palm tree within Atlantic Forest biome (Carvalho et al, 2017). Therefore, PAs that cover CSAs offer species long-term protection, regardless of the species' dispersion ability and distribution shifts (Collevatti et al, 2013).…”
