Climate responses to SATIRE and SIM-based spectral solar forcing in a 3D atmosphere-ocean coupled GCM

Abstract: We apply two reconstructed spectral solar forcing scenarios, one SIM (Spectral Irradiance Monitor) based, the other the SATIRE (Spectral And Total Irradiance REconstruction) modeled, as inputs to the GISS (Goddard Institute for Space Studies) GCMAM (Global Climate Middle Atmosphere Model) to examine climate responses on decadal to centennial time scales, focusing on quantifying the difference of climate response between the two solar forcing scenarios. We run the GCMAM for about 400 years with present day trac… Show more

“…In the climate system, the processes that take place are due to the combination of two main factors: the solar external factor and its own internal mechanism. The complexity of this combination is difficult to quantify in space-time by deterministic-explicit or stochasticdynamic models [1,2]. The relationship between the internal and external determinant factors in the evolution of the terrestrial climate system remains quite unknown, despite recent and increasingly sophisticated modeling.…”

“…Thus, the sensitivity of some climate hydro-climatic processes may not represent true responses when a physical parameter does not respond linearly with the solar forcing [2]. In turn, even hydro-climatic processes have nonlinear links between them [3].…”

“…There are also cases when it is not possible to adequately capture climate responses to solar forcing even through robust models coupled ocean-atmosphere of general circulation. Thus the sensitivity of some climate hydroclimatic processes may not represent true responses when a physical parameter does not respond linearly with the solar forcing [2] . In turn even hydroclimatic processes between them have nonlinear links [3].…”

“…Chemistry-climate model simulations show that different input data sets might have significant influences on the responses and therefore implications of Earth's atmosphere (e.g. Ermolli et al, 2013;Wen et al, 2017). The time series of SIM is continued by an improved SIM instrument as part of NASA's Total and Spectral Solar Irradiance Sensor (TSIS-1, since late 2017) mounted at the International Space Station (ISS) (Pilewskie et al, 2018) and in a compact version on CubeSat as Compact Spectral Irradiance Monitor (CSIM) launched in December 2018 (Harber, 2019).…”
