Climate hazards: Lessons from recent events in the United States

Abstract: Three recent cases of climate extremes are studied to identify human impacts and response strategies and to identify common characteristics that may help illuminate the nature of climate hazards. The 1980 heat wave in the central United States, 1981 cold wave in Boston, Massachusetts, and recent flooding and lake level rise in northern Utah, illustrate several important aspects of climate hazards that separate them from the more traditional set of catastrophic events (e.g. tornadoes, hurricanes and earthquakes… Show more

“…Geographers, especially climatologists, have continued t o expand their efforts in this field (Kates et al 1985;Yarnal et al 1987), and several are presently being funded by the Environmental Protection Agency as part of a commitment to evaluate the impact on society of a predicted long-term climate warming (EPA 1987). Studies by geographers have described the interregional economic impacts of heat waves, cold spells, and storms (Riebsame 1985;Riebsame et al 1986 (White and Hertz-Picciotto 1985;Munn 1986;Kalkstein and Valimont 1987b), but most of the work has been performed by researchers in the medical community. For example, studies at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) have identified a number of factors that may inhibit the onset of heat stroke, such as consumption of fluids and living in well-shaded residences (Kilbourne et al 1982).…”
