Climate Change–Related Water Disasters’ Impact on Population Health

Abstract: Nurses comprise the largest global healthcare workforce and are in a position to advocate for disaster preparedness for CCRWDs, develop more robust environmental health policies, and work towards mitigating exposure to environmental toxins that may threaten human health.

“…Other susceptibility factors for mental illness related to these events include: women, the young or elderly age, having a disability, being part of an ethnic or linguistic minority, living in a household with a female head and having lower level of schooling. Among residents and relief workers, having limited resources or living in lower income countries are additional risk factors (77). The disaster can only exacerbate any existing barriers in the access of mental health care in the population (78).…”

“…In fact, the intensity and frequency of hurricanes, cyclones, tropical storms, and floods are increasing and likely the direct result of global warming. 85 Any major disaster, whether natural or manmade, has the potential to place renal patients in jeopardy. The best approach in predicted disasters is for individuals who were previously dialysis-dependent to evacuate early to locations where dialysis care can be reliably provided.…”

“…Conceptual model development to understand the predictors and consequences of the human biological response to increasing heat environments; farmworkers exposed to the hazard of heightened heat stress because of global warming require public health interventions to keep them safe and healthy as the climate continues to change Climate change‐related water disasters have devastating impacts on affected communities and residents’ health; nurses must be at the forefront of advocating disaster preparedness, environmental health policies, and developing mitigation plans related to secondary environmental toxin exposure The roles of nurses in weather‐related disaster preparedness require hands‐on preparation across schools and practice settings that prepare the nurse to respond to a number of potential occurrences; debriefing about these events is key to learning and advancing disaster preparedness strategies .…”
