Groundwater resources in southwestern Tunisia are facing serious quantity and quality degradation. Given that they are the only source used for oasis irrigation, serious impacts on the soil of the region are expected. Accordingly, the main objective of this study is to evaluate the suitability of the sampled water from the Complex Terminal aquifer for irrigation purposes and to determine the potential impacts of their long-term use within the present agricultural practices on soil properties. The calculated ionic ratios indicate different classes ranging from permissible to unsuitable waters with respect to alkalinity standards (sodium adsorption ratio from 3.68 to 9.34, %Na from 36.7 to 61.2, and rill erodibility from 0.48 to 1.43). Water samples present high values of electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids, and potential salinity, about 54.5, 29.4, and 32.2%, respectively, which indicates serious salinity hazard. All the sampled waters may induce corrosion and clogging problems as deduced from the calculated light dynamic penetrometer and total hardness indices. The weighted water quality indices results (Canadian Water Quality Index and the irrigation water quality index) confirm the poor quality of the used irrigation water. The results of this study coupled with field investigations indicate that the cumulative impacts of low water quality and poor agricultural practices have damaged the total oasean ecosystem. The purpose of the present study was to compare the prediction performances of three statistical methods, namely, information value (IV), weight of evidence (WoE) and frequency ratio (FR), for landslide susceptibility mapping (LSM) at the east of Constantine region. A detailed landslide inventory of the study area with a total of 81 landslide locations was compiled from aerial photographs, satellite images and field surveys. This landslide inventory was randomly split into a testing dataset (70%) for training the models, and the remaining (30%) was used for validation purpose. Nine landslide-related factors such as slope gradient, slope aspect, elevation, distance to streams, lithology, distance to lineaments, precipitation, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and stream density were used in the landslide susceptibility analyses. The inventory was adopted to analyse the spatial relationship between these landslide factors and landslide occurrences. Based on IV, WoE and FR approaches, three landslide susceptibility zonation maps were categorized, namely, “very high, high, moderate, low, and very low”. The results were compared and validated by computing area under Road the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC). From the statistics, it is noted that prediction scores of the FR, IV and WoE models are relatively similar with 73.32%, 73.95% and 79.07%, respectively. However, the map, obtained using the WoE technique, was experienced to be more suitable for the study area. Based on the results, the produced LSM can serve as a reference for planning and decision-making regarding the general use of the land.

One of the major challenges in assessing groundwater vulnerability to pollution is the inadequate factors number and weight. Therefore, to carefully improve the assessment of groundwater vulnerability, a model independent of weight assignment errors was used. Moreover, the specific vulnerability index (SVI) of Sidi Bouzid North's groundwater was assessed in this study. Intrinsic vulnerability index (IVI) assessment was determined in the first step by the arithmetic mean calculation by the index overlay method (IOM) based on the D: Depth of aquifer; P: annual average Precipitation; L: Lithology of the vadose zone and S: percent of Slope (DPLS) model. Then SVI was assessed by linking new factors (LU and NO 3 − ) to IVI. Consequently, 83 samples were analysed for NO 3 − , showing high values that exceed 50 mg l¹. The spatial distribution of IVI shows three vulnerability classes in the study area, namely low (8%), moderate (15%)and high (77%). The evaluation of SVI based on the risks associated with the NO 3 − and LU factors using GIS indicates that about 95% of the total study area is classified with high SVI levels. It displayed a good correlation with NO 3 − and provided a high discretization of the groundwater risk from natural and anthropogenic pollution. This alarming situation suggests the necessity to apply water-saving irrigation action for adequate water management.
