The necessity for transitioning to renewable energy sources and the intermittent nature of the natural variables lead to the integration of storage units into these projects. In this research paper, wind turbines and solar modules are combined with pumped hydro storage, batteries, and green hydrogen. Energy management strategies are described for five different scenarios of hybrid renewable energy systems, based on single or hybrid storage technologies. The motivation is driven by grid stability issues and the limited access to fresh water in the Greek islands. A RES-based desalination unit is introduced into the hybrid system for access to low-cost fresh water. The comparison of single and hybrid storage methods, the exploitation of seawater for the simultaneous fulfillment of water for domestic and agricultural purposes, and the evaluation of different energy, economic, and environmental indices are the innovative aspects of this research work. The results show that pumped hydro storage systems can cover the energy and water demand at the minimum possible price, 0.215 EUR/kWh and 1.257 EUR/m3, while hybrid storage technologies provide better results in the loss of load probability, payback period and CO2 emissions. For the pumped hydro–hydrogen hybrid storage system, these values are 21.40%, 10.87 years, and 2297 tn/year, respectively.

Reservoirs are human-made ecosystems with diverse purposes that benefit humans both directly and indirectly. They however cause changes in geomorphological processes such as sediment cycling and influence the composition and structure of aquatic biota. This study aimed to identify water and sediment quality parameters as drivers of macroinvertebrates and fish communities during the cool-dry and hot-wet seasons in the littoral zones of three subtropical reservoirs (Albasini, Thathe and Nandoni). Macroinvertebrates and fish were collected from three sites (n = 3 from each site) in each reservoir. A total of 501 and 359 macroinvertebrates and fish individuals were collected throughout the sampling period, respectively. The present study employed a two-way ANOVA in conjunction with redundancy analysis (RDA) to assess the relationships that exist between water and sediment variables, macroinvertebrates diversity and species abundances across seasons. Based on the two-way ANOVA model, significant differences were observed across reservoirs for evenness, Simpson’s diversity, and total abundance, while seasonal differences were observed for most metrics, with exception for evenness. The RDA results identified four water variables (i.e., water temperature, oxidation–reduction potential, pH and conductivity) and one sediment metal (Mg) as the most important parameters in driving the fish community structure. Field observations and metal results attest that the Nandoni reservoir shows high concentrations of metals in sediments as compared to other reservoirs, suggesting that anthropogenic activities such as car washing, brick making, recreation, fishing, wastewater treatment work and landfill site may be the major contributor of metals to the Nandoni reservoir, which accumulate in the littoral zones. Findings of this study highlight the need to analyze reservoir ecological conditions at several scales. The study of macroinvertebrates and fish, water, and sediment chemistry in the littoral zone laid the groundwork for proposing measures for conserving aquatic ecosystems.

Student’s Willingness to Change a Pathway to Carbon Neutrality

To lower human-induced carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere, the world must aim toward a carbon-neutral future to successfully combat climate change. The research aimed to investigate students’ willingness to change their attitude as a pathway to achieving carbon neutrality. An online survey was created using the JISC tool to examine students at the University of Salford's desire to change their behaviour to meet a carbon neutrality objective. Overall, 122 responses were received from the respondents and a non-parametric statistical approach was used to analyse the data. The Spearman’s rho correlation coefficient of respondent’s familiarity level with climate change and their willingness to change was found to be moderate negative and statistically significant at 0.001 level. Out of 122 respondents who completed the study survey, 30 (24.6%) of them said that they first learned about climate change in school, Internet and television sources came second on sources utilised for information. In addition, 93 (76.2%) of the respondents were ready to give up certain individual benefits to reduce CO2 emissions. Carbon neutrality seems like an ambitious goal for policymakers to attain; though people are willing to alter their lifestyles to reduce CO2 emissions in the areas of energy consumption, food waste, and transportation. However, they are not willing to go beyond if doing so will cost them more; people need to be made more aware of the issue and adopt a pattern to reduce wasteful lifestyles to reduce their carbon footprint, and it will require true political and widespread social commitment.
