Climate change and developing country growth: the cases of Malawi, Mozambique, and Zambia

Abstract: We consider the interplay of climate change impacts, global mitigation policies, and the economic interests of developing countries to 2050. Focusing on Malawi, Mozambique, and Zambia, we employ a structural approach to biophysical and economic modeling that incorporates climate uncertainty and allows for rigorous comparison of climate, biophysical, and economic outcomes across global mitigation regimes. We find that effective global mitigation policies generate two sources of benefit. First, less distorted cl… Show more

“…The overall area of study (Fig. 1) is an extension and complement to prior work (Arndt et al 2019;Schlosser and Strzepek 2015;and Fant et al 2015) that provides multi-sector socio-economic-environmental assessments of climate risks for developing nations across Africa, and the effectiveness of low-carbon pathways to reduce risks. This study will present a screening-level assessment of potential climate shifts over southern Africa and focus on two key hydro-climatic variables: precipitation and near-surface air temperature (T a ).…”

“…Social consequences of these climate-related environmental problems include flooding, drought, which lead to the displacement of population, famine, hunger, and loss of economic livelihood. These effects occur worldwide; however, vulnerable regions in SSA such as Zambia are hit the most because of their limited economic resilience ( Arndt et al, 2019 , Fayiga et al, 2018 , Gannon et al, 2018 ). In these regions, resource scarcity from water and land leads to food insecurity and forced migration ( Nkomoki, Bavorová, & Banout, 2019 ).…”
