Climate change adaptation: Is there a role for intervention research?

Abstract: While climate change will expose regions to similar impacts, the extent of those impacts and effective response at the local level will be determined not only by the location's sensitivity and vulnerability but also by local groups and individuals' capacity, including their institutional links, social networks and motivation to action. In parallel, scientific information and research plays a critical role in informing climate change adaptation by providing both an improved understanding of the actual climate r… Show more

“…Information helps households make rational decisions, and hence, is vital to ensure that adaptation is carried out in an adequate and timely manner (Stern, 2007). It plays a critical role in informing climate change adaptation as it provides both an improved understanding of the actual climate risks and response alternatives (Serrao-Neumann et al, 2013). Even early warning systems are usually way more than just alert systems.…”

“…In this paper, we consider why and how inclusion and responsiveness need to be sensitive to more 'local' understandings of vulnerability and need, drawing on research that explores such understandings in different cultural contexts, conducted in north east Brazil (Taddei 2011(Taddei , 2012, the north coast of São Paulo (Serrao-Neumann et al 2013;Di Giulio et al 2014), and England and Wales (Groves et al forthcoming), using a variety of qualitative methods, including narrative, biographical interviews, action research and intervention research. We are not implying that nations hold specific, nationwide sets of values that can be neatly defined and compared; nor are we saying that values across regions are also necessarily different in all cases, or that BRIC nations are necessarily similar or different from the UK or Europe.…”
