Climate Change according to Ecuadorian academics–Perceptions versus facts

Abstract: Climate change has become one of the most important topics in each country’s government agendas. The current effects demand quicker actions in order to decrease the speed at which the global warming and climate is changing, which are commonly seen in global agreements to reduce pollution. However, the main changes to face and mitigate such phenomena depends on each country´s decision and not on global agreements as the causes are continent-wide although the effects and magnitudes may be local. One of the key c… Show more

“…On the other hand, hazards based on atmospheric and or hydro-meteorological phenomena and or processes also have left behind enormous economic losses and occasionally deaths. Such catastrophic events are based on seasonal activities such as rainy or dry seasons as well as the "El Niño" and "La Niña" phenomenona (Perreaulta and Valdivia, 2010;Toulkeridis et al, 2020;Toulkeridis et al, 2016;Mato and Toulkeridis, 2017). Furthermore, due to extreme social and political activities occur extremely often public unrests, which have led to a variety of coups resulting to removals of several presidents, while the dismissal of ministers and deputies is almost of monthly frequency (Edwards, 2015).…”

“…The fight against climatic change is a priority for Ecuador, especially due to its being vulnerable to the dramatic effects that this causes, owing to both its equatorial geographical situation and its economic situation (Toulkeridis et al 2020). Yet, as Jakob (2017) points out, there is a paucity of scientific studies which analyse decarbonisation strategies and the evolution of GHG emissions for lower per capita income countries.…”

“…Yet, as Jakob (2017) points out, there is a paucity of scientific studies which analyse decarbonisation strategies and the evolution of GHG emissions for lower per capita income countries. This is therefore a matter which it is necessary to go more deeply into (Toulkeridis et al 2020). The literature has some studies which mainly analyse the evolution of CO2 emissions, their relation with the GDP trend and the policies of decarbonisation.…”

“…The analysis of the environmental risk of natural events presents limitations due to the fact that data from the study area of the slopes, lithology, soil moisture, intensity of rainfall, maximum and minimum rainfall of the last 10 years are required, sequentially, we are not has studies of the water quality of the Coca river, the PDOT Development and Territorial Planning Plan of the study area does not record the biodiversity of the area where the areas with the greatest diversity of trees, insects and amphibians in the world and other species are indicated, because in the Amazon amphibians are of concern because they are threatened as well as macroinvertebrates that are considered as biological indicators of the ecological quality of the water, which did not allow registering information on the biotic component of the study area [66], [67].…”
