Client-server architectures for distributed learning environments: a proposal

Abstract: In this paper we describe a work in progress at University of Salerno concerning the realization and experimentation of a Distributed Learning Environment Support Tool developed by means of Java language in a Intranet environment. In particular, we focus our discussion on the definition of the existing scenario, on the requirements specification and on the description of our overall system providing first experimental results. We firstly give a general description of our system, utilizing Object-Oriented method… Show more

“…Reed and Afjeh design and implement a Java Gas Turbine Simulator to provide an interactive environment for constructing and analyzing gas turbine systems [16]. Arcelli, De Santo and Chianese propose a Distributed Learning Environment Support Tool employing Java language in an intranet environment [1]. The JavaGram application developed at Clemson University allows students to turn in homework diagrams such as signal-flow charts in signal processing classes [13].…”

“…For example, management information systems consisting of a network of client PC's and database servers are described in [30] and a system used by a telemarketing company is analyzed in [22]. A client server architecture has been proposed for a distributed learning environment tool in [4]. Client server systems have also been used to provide a middle layer between the user and a legacy mainframe-based system [18].…”

“…Reed and Afjeh (1998) designed and implemented a Java Gas Turbine Simulator to provide an interactive environment for constructing and analyzing gas turbine systems. De Santo and Chianese (Arcelli, 1998) proposed a Distributed Learning Environment Support Tool employing Java language in an intranet environment (Stefano, 1997). The JavaGram application developed at Clemson University allows the students to turn in their homework diagrams such as the signal flowcharts in signal processing classes (Patterson, 1998).…”
