Clickstream Data Yields High-Resolution Maps of Science

Abstract: BackgroundIntricate maps of science have been created from citation data to visualize the structure of scientific activity. However, most scientific publications are now accessed online. Scholarly web portals record detailed log data at a scale that exceeds the number of all existing citations combined. Such log data is recorded immediately upon publication and keeps track of the sequences of user requests (clickstreams) that are issued by a variety of users across many different domains. Given these advantage… Show more

“…Perhaps the first point to be made about INQUIRE [13] is that it has not yet achieved high visibility within the university, and in large measure that relates to the potential burden on faculty and staff time which is a significant deterrent to participation. Although it is taken for granted that we now live in a blogging culture in which anyone can create opinion, relatively few choose to.…”

“…This group also makes use of clickstream data, virtual trails of users surfing the Internet [15]. Following these ideas Wan et al [16] studied download data from the CNKI database, a large Chinese full-text database, leading to a download immediacy index.…”

“…Like MESUR, SERUM also aims to obtain usage data from the publishers in order to derive usage metrics from these. However, other than MESUR it is neither the objective of SERUM to create a complex semantic model of the scholarly communication process nor to produce science maps (Bollen et al, 2009) on the basis of the established reference data set. The maps and ranking services available from 'MESUR: science maps and rankings from large-scale usage data' are highly complex and only insightful for a minority of experts.…”
