Click characteristics of northern bottlenose whales (Hyperoodon ampullatus) and Sowerby's beaked whales (Mesoplodon bidens) off eastern Canada

Abstract: Passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) is crucial to expanding the knowledge of beaked whales, including the northern bottlenose whale (Hyperoodon ampullatus) and Sowerby's beaked whale (Mesoplodon bidens). Existing descriptions of clicks produced by these species are limited by sample size, number of individuals recorded, and geographic scope. Data from multiple encounters in the western North Atlantic are used to provide a quantitative description of clicks produced by these species. Recordings from nine encounte… Show more

“…A single animal was successfully tagged, but the animal immediately dislodged the tag (Visser 2012). Recently, a few acoustic recordings have been made of Sowerby's beaked whales, laying the groundwork for passive acoustic monitoring for the presence of this species (Cholewiak et al 2013, Stanistreet et al 2016, Stanistreet et al 2017, Clarke et al 2019. There are no data regarding this species' abundance or movement behaviour anywhere in its range.…”

“…Several beaked whale species might occur in the study area (Kowarski et al, 2018). While Sowerby's beaked whale clicks are likely too high frequency to be detected using a sample rate of 64 kS/ s (Cholewiak et al, 2013), northern bottlenose whales and Cuvier's beaked whales could be detectable (Stanistreet et al, 2017;Kowarski et al, 2018;Clarke et al, 2019). No attempt was made here to classify detected echolocation clicks to investigate the presence of beaked whales.…”
